I have a broken sail slug to replace. Anyone familiar with how to replace this onto the webbing on the main sail?
Thanks,

yes and no

JC, When this happened to me last summer, I temporarily fastened a new clip with a plastic shackle to the webbing, and that lasted me through the season. I had a sailmaker do it the right way when I had some other minor sail work done over the winter.

I took one of the broken slugs and webbing off the sail, and took it apart. Then, I bought slugs and 1/2" webbing from Sailrite - enough for the whole sail (30 feet, as I recall). Meanwhile, I used 1/8 line to triple tie a new slug onto the sail, so I could keep sailing. This actually is working out pretty good.

At home, I assembled and sewed 14 or 15 new slug/webbing sub-assemblies on my Calenda beastie of a sewing machine (Actually same as Pfaff 130). I will then hand sew (with a sail palm) these on the sail with a sail palm during our vacation cruise in August. Not the easiest, but the hand sewing is pretty much the only way to do the last step.

OH - I also melted the ends of the webbing as I cut the pieces. No fraying...

Re: yes and no

I have replaced some on my main, but it depends on how yours were originally fastened. Mine has a small grommet top and bottom of each slug that the webbing is sewn to. I just cut the threads that held the webbing in place, and took the old slug to my sail maker. He gave me a replacement, the right needle, proper thread, and then I just sewed it back in place using the slug above it as a sewing guide. It is really a simple job, and all you would need is a little block of wood or similar to push the needle through the multiple parts of webbing unless you already have a sail maker's palm or thimble.
