I am thinking of modifying my rope luff sail on my 1982 Spindrift Mariner to a slide/slug setup. My mast has a very high sail slot (more than 3' above the base, have never measured it exactly) Defender Marine has slugs of various sizes in mm measurements. Does anyone know what the correct size is? Also is a slug better than a slide type. It would seem to me the slug shape might slide better. My intention is to place a sailslot cover over the opening once the sail is in place. I am tired of having to feed the sail in solo, which I am all the time, from the get go. It means also I cannot flake the sail as easily in my boot at my dock. Any feelings. Have thought of making a new sail slot lower, but the rope luff is more difficult to raise I would think ie: alone!

one of the best changes you can do, and you place a slug stop in the slot to keep sail on the mast. makes life soo much easier to reef or just lower for the night. slides run in a track attached to the mast, slugs run in the mast groove. you will have to measure YOUR mast groove to get proper slugs. figure about every 18 inches with extra slug at top of sail, 2 close together to help keep from binding at top when raising the sail. all stuff available from sailrite.com. do shop for sail slug prices before ordering. did my javelin main many years ago, with no regrets.

I was real happy with Allegro Sail in WI.
Hi Bill, Ask for Bob Kearns at Allegro Sails bkearns@wi.rr.com. He is a sail maker in Pleasant Prairie WI. I wanted to change the sail slides on my 222.Bob shipped everything I needed with reasonable pricing and complete set of instructions as to how to do the work. The sail I had, was a full batten main. 18 to 20 slides, ( Slugs ). He sugjested using a non stick type of slide where the batten are to keep those slides from hanging up.. They needed to be sewed onto the sail a certain way using a flat strap and stitched in a certain way. Drections were copied from a book and sent with even the needle and special waxed thread and strapping. Wow that was way more than I expected.. Tell Bob Kearn that I told you to get a hold of him. Bending over backwards is what gets new business and keeps the old. I was impressed!! Materials were less than WM too.

Sail Slug Conversion
Thanks all- Particularly Bruce as yours is closer to my Mariner. Sailrite seems to be the cheapest slugs and also in Yahoo Mariners group I have had reports of them. Have curtailed my sailing for this year I am afraid with a clumsy fall that has my left shoulder bruised or hopefully not worsae for a while. Good time to start converting my second sail. Both are old (but not as old as I am!!) so at 73 and new to sailing (doing power to sail is opposite the norm I know!!) I am not interested in getting into racing etc. Unfortunately I am solo sailing so far so need any break on sail hoisting etc. I have a grommet kit and will soon start the modification. Thanks for your help.

Hi again Bill L When I read your post about the gromet kit, I looked for my receipt from Allegro Sails. I wanted the kind that have the metal hook so that I could use the SS shackle. 15 AO18S 7/16 Round slides @ $2.00 30.00 15 B130 SS Shackle @ 2.00 30.00 3 All slip Slug Slide ( These were for the batten slide ) 5.00 18 clear plastic Shackle protectors NC Shipping 5.00 ------------- 80.00 Allegro Sails is a dealer for NEIL PRYDE sails. I was impressed with the quality of the original Neil Pryde sail that came with my 222 that I wanted to convert a full batten main sail to these slides The metal shackles and slide hooks seem to give it just the right weight to go up and down very nicely.. The only hang up I sometimes get is with the lazy jacks. I am 67 years old and I met a fellow with a very nice yellow 27 O'Day this summer. He and his daughter races their boat. Oh what fun it is. We do fun races 10 min. starts, No protests allowed..Out from our marina we have the Crib (water intake for Toledo ) and two other race course bouys. we race anywhere from 5 mile triangle to 15 mile depending on the wind and weather. i tried the metal shackles with the plastic and found, for me, that they were too lose and allowed the slugs to bind, took them all out and used the nylon straps, sewed in place. walk the docks to see the different ways to attach the slugs.
