Sail Slide Key

Last week we went to the lake for a wonderful sail and as I was bending on the main (due to a bat problem I've been stowing the main down below) I realized the sail slide "key" was no longer attached to the string at the mast. Fortunately, I looked down and there it was liying on the deck. That may very well be the first time something fell to the deck and didn't proceed to a watery grave!

I retied the key to the string and off we sailed. The string is quite worn and I need to replace it or find another place to attach the key. I didn't spend a lot of time looking at the fitting on the mast, but it appeared that the design doesn't allow itself to be replaced.

Has anyone addressed this small but important issue?

I took a lanyard that used to be used as an outboard safety cutoff line (had an extra). One end I clipped to the key, the other I clipped (somewhere) to the boom. My boom goes below every time I trailer up. It's fallen off or I've dropped it a few times with no worries.
