Boat show season is starting and our newly aquired 37 cutter is in dire need of a new mainsail(even my wife told me to get a new one)....AirForce sails has a standard quote of around $2400 for their offshore(2 reef, extra reenforced ,2 full batten )mainsail and considering the fact that at most i will be going to the bahamas for several months that seems pricy......several people have refered me to DIRK(national sail supply) a rep of rolly tasker sails that has sails made overseas and his price is considerably less.....yea i know you get what you pay fore but the assurance is the material is the same, the workmanship is good but the labor is cheap(and so am i at this point>>>>(new boat, lots to fix>>>>only $1500)if it lasts only 8 years instead of 10....oh well....MY QUESTION TO YOU ALL IS>>>>>>> give me dimensions of the main....i have measured my mast and from the gooseneck to the full hoist of the main halyard i get 41'4" and the foot is 13'....they are telling me the sails they have made in the past measure 39'8" x 13'....i am going with a loose footed main with 2 upper full battens, 2 reefs, 8oz cloth.....HELP....give me some SIZE feedback gang before my wife changes her mind and i have to sail with this old bed sheet i now have(foot looks like it needs a zipper installed like in the good old days of the old zipper footed mains) oh one more thing i am most lilely going to remove the inner stay and the club jib and go with the 150 for local sailing, the yankee and the club just don't get me moving here in the light summer winds of florida. may put it back in feb when we get the winter (air 70 degrees, wind E 12-25, water way to cold to go into at 60-65 degrees, winter is hell)thanks in advance chet p>>>>>>sorry to be asking all these questions but this boat is completly new to me cp

Sails

Dear Chet, I own a 1980 H37C and have replaces the sails over the past few years. I am a Marine Surveyor by trade so see a lot of sails from different sailmakers in my work. I presently have a Tasker main similar to what you described and a tasker 105% genoa with a high clew. I have been impressed with the quality and the cut of the Tasker sails and only purchased mine after seeing several on other boats. I also have a 135% Bi radial genoa that was made by Gleason Sails. I only use the 135 for light air and never with the staysail. The dimentions they gave you for the main are correct. As orignally equipped there is about a foot of extra hoist available on the main. On my boat I raised the boom by 6 inches to get clearance in the cockpit for a bimini with stand up headroom. As for a headsail, I would not recommend anything more than a 135. Remember the boat is a true cutter rig. The mast is almost exactly in the middle of the boat. This means that the boat has a large J measurement for its overall length. I tried a 150 on my boat and found that it increased the heeling force without giving me any additional performance even in light air. Hope this helped. Dan Sheehan

Split difference

The chandlery here has a US-made, custom doyle mainsail for $1887 - splits the difference right down the middle. ph.

Dan, more info please.

You must have seen the "H37C Headsails" thread in this forum. Mr. Pearson makes a good case for building a sloop. But even with my First Mate aboard I still single-hand and small sails make sense for me. How do the dimensions of your 105 compare to the original yankee? Is it a problem tacking around the inner-stay? Do you use the larger sails with the inner-stay in place? I am still not sure I want to eliminate it even make it detachable. Thanks.

Ed More info.

I only run the 135 without the inner forestay. Any sail over 110% is almost impossible to tack through the slot between the inner forestay and the headstay. The 105 works well without the inner forestay and is almost the same dimentions as the orignal yankee when furled about 15%. That way it works with the staysail in heavier weather and still gives me that extra push in light air. The dimentions of the 105 are Luff 44'6", LP 17'8" and leach iis 40' The sail is 7.62 oz Challenge sailcloth and was made by Tasker. I am very happy with this sail and in fact did not use my 135 at all this season. Its for sale by the way.Hope that answers some of the questions you asked. By the way my inner forestay is removable and is usually not rigged except when going offshore or in heavy weather. I also eliminated the club boom so I dont have to store it on board. Dan Sheehan

dan....email me direct as i might be interested in the 135... i also am interested in what you did about moving the boom up higher..did you just do what has been mentioned by using the top hole that the gooseneck is screwed into as the bottom hole for the new location? is mour mainsheet on the cabintop or in the cockpit? tried to locate you on the HOW owners list but no luck chet p

Final decision.

Well, maybe. Having discussed it with all of you, with some other friends, and with Dirk at Rolly Tasker I am keeping her as a cutter. And I really appreciate all of the good input. I am not confident enough in the rigging to remove the mid-stay. If the admiral will loosen up on the checkbook I am going to order a 105% from Tasker. It gives me twenty percent more sail than the yankee. Downwind I'll hang up an old used asymmetrical I guess. I'll improve the staysail handling, either with Dan's idea of removing the boom or with a furler on a higher boom. Either way allows me to stow the dinghy on the cabin forward of the mast. Thanks again.

Dan, when the staysail club is gone...

how do you rig the staysail sheets? Also, my mainsail is original hunter material, I believe. Have you (or anyone else out there) purchased a Tasker main? If so, what type of batten system? Does the Tasker main have the same type of slide arrangement for the lower slides (fastened with a rope vs directly to the luff)? Ditto Ed's question on raising the goosenck; did you just reposition it so the lower holes on the plate fit the uper holes on the mast? Any noticeable difference sailing? Thanks. Walt

i am also considering a new tasker mainsail....maybe there are others out there and we could get a group discount for spring delivery ( they normally give a 10% discount to del in the spring maybe we can get a bit more) not cheap just frugal(OK cheap) chet

New Tasker Main

Seven weeks ago I purchased a tri-radial main from National Sail for my 1981 Hunter 30. The tasker sail showed up ten days after my order. The measurements where exactly the specs I ordered, and the quality looks like it will last a long while. The sail goes up easier, trims better and performs great. Their price was one of the lowest and their responses to my calls and e-mails the quickest. I also purchased a new sail cover from them since the old one would not completely cover the new sail. Two thumbs up for National Sails. Mike

Thanks Mike, add one more. . .

satisfied Tasker customer. I plan to order that new jib just as soon as the Admiral gets over the shock of the Nexus system. Yesterday I ordered the wind, log, depth system. Told her it made sense to do this while the mast is down. :)
