Sailing today with friend who accidentally tore most all the the slide main sail guide out of the mast when dousing the main in heavy wind weather on Beaver Lake today. The wind was gusting to 20kts. We were all having fun until the wind kept building.
The safest choice I made was to start mtr point into wind and douse mainsail. motored in to marina slip with no problem but ; I'm certain that the main sail is ruined.
Lesson learned don't trust another person experience no matter how long they have said they been sailing. Three on board isnt always best.......life goes on.lol
Which is better ; to send sail into cleaning repair , or purchase new/used sail? Thank you guys ..mark<><

Kinda depends on the age and condition of the main. Just replaced my main because it was 20 years old (not a racer) and the repair, cleaning, and reconditioning was going to cost almost as much as a new sail. Keptt the same double reef points, the loose foot, and same heavey duty mast/goom slides. I got two estimates and there was some difference but both were just under the new cost. My conclusion was it was worth the difference for a new sail that has not been streched and with no sewing problems just around the corner. Good luck!!

The torn sail luff was a result of an aged sail and/or failing to completely release the mainsheet and traveler before releasing the halyard.

Why don't you just get prices for both, then decide. I have to agree with srhummer, depends on the condition of the cloth. Just my 2c worth

Mark, could you be specific about what tore or broke? Was it just the nylon sail slugs that slide into the mast track, or did the actual sail fabric rip? If the fabric ripped, where and how much? BrianW

Hi guys...I had five slides on mainsail replaced with new plastic "slugs" and new tell tails sewed on for $ 88.00. Sail was gone for under two weeks.
This included shipping, and three hundred dollars of insurance.
The lady does great work from her home.
