I just bought a PY26 off an auction, good price but needs some TLC...


Looking at my sails, Jib is in great condition looks relatively new/fresh...


My main is probably the original as it has the PY26 numbering on it as well as a paceship lable..it's not in bad shape the Clew has some weathered threads (probably cause it suck out the end of the boom cover) and a small (4") seperation on the leech side of the sail...nothing bad but probably should be repaired before I go out to prevent further damage..


My spinaker is pretty much blown out/shredded so I'll be in the market for a new to me/used one...


On the main sail, is this something I take to a local sail shop to repair, or is there a reccomended refab shop I should send it to..?

I should mention there really is no "local" for me as of yet ...I'm land locked a 100 miles from the deep so I'll have to ship anyway, but I did see a few "lofts" near the marina where I "plan" on docking, so I might try there first..

It's best to go local, but I'm landlocked and Chicago is probably the best place to find a good loft, so I called Jerry at Sailcare. They did a really nice job on my genoa- repairs and re-cut- and said my main wasn't worth fixing. I appreciated his honesty.

Sailcare in Ford City, PA does a fantastic job. Dropped my sails there about 3 weeks ago and picked them up 10 days later. They did a number of repairs including replacing the weathered straps on the sails, fixed a couple of tears on the main, replaced the sunbrella UV strips on the genoa, put a crash window in the genoa, put on new telltails and best of all, cleaned both sails (they use a drycleaning process) and re-resined them. They look and feel like new and they are 17 years old. On top of all that, they are very nice folks to work with. When we dropped of the sails they unfolded them and went over all the needed repairs, how they would do them, and gave me a firm price for everything. While not cheap, all of the above was about 20% of what new sails would have cost. You would not be disappointed.

sail repairs

any sailmaker can make repairs. Its more about location and convenience. If you know how
to sew you can repair a sail yourself. get a roll of sail repair tape a palm and a couple of sailmakers needles and your ready to go
