Hello,
Does anyone have preferences for a sail shop in the Maryland area? Prefferably the Annapolis-Baltimore-DC area.
Thanks,

Hello,

Now I am having thoughts of just replacing 3 sails. They are kind of ratty anyway.

Does it make a difference who you get to make sails?
The sails are such an important part of the boats performance, I am thinking that I should go to the sailmaker that makes a lot of Albin Vega sails. But... who (whom?) would that be?

Also, on my main sail, where the clue (clew? cloo, kloe... I'm gettin punchy) meets the boom, it seems that it meets the boom to early. There is like 6-12 inches (15-30cm) of good boom left that has no sail on it. It's like I could get more sail area up if the sail foot were longer. Is that right? Is that the way everyone elses sails are too?

Has anyone done anything to get increased sail performance when they ordered new sails?

Thanks,
Roy

Dear Roy,

My Vega is moored in a dutch Yachting harbour. So I cannot help you with
new sails.

There are a lot of excellent sailmakers in this country but this is
probably not a any use to you.

I had both my jibs and main sails replaced last year.

I use one rolling jib now, so I wonder why you want three sail replaced.

Roy,

We got our mainsail from Alan Critchlow, who is a frequent contributor
to this list, is currently (I think) sailing his Vega 'Voila' with his
wife in the Bahamas, and has a sailmaking business in Quebec. The sail
is beautifully made and has made a real difference in our Vega's
performance. We are planning to ask him to make our genoa when we get
around to installing roller reefing. Alan would decidedly be our
recommendation. Here's his email address, alan.critchlow@...

I was very pleased with the sails that Neil Pryde made for Lyric. Their loft
is in Hong Kong but they have reps around the world. Jim Leech in Sausalito
came to my marina and measured the boat before the sails were ordered.
Quality was very good and price was fantastic. Walt

Thanks for the sail info.
So you just order them and they work the first time?
What if the sails need adjusting?

I'm just a little hesitant because I used to race on a boat where the owner got a new main and it never seemed to have quite the right shape. You had to look closely though.
