Does anyone know of a sail loft or school which offers classes in DIY sail repair or construction, preferably on the East Coast? I'm aware of two in Port Townsend, WA--Northwest Boat School and Port Townsend Sails. Haven't found anything closer.

Ever heard of Sailrite?

I know your looking for a school, but you might want to check out sailrite.com. This is a company didicated to making sailers self reliante. They sell all kinds of sailmaking and canvas supplies and have sail kits as well. They also sell new reworked sewing machines that are strong enough to go thru any kind of sail material or canvas, even 14 layers of Sunbrella at once! They have some very good books on sailmaking & sail repair. You can even down load some of the sail repair instructions for free.

Thanks

John, thanks, I've purchased materials from Sailrite, and done a couple of elementary projects. I may bite the bullet and get one of their kits. I was hoping to get some more instruction. But maybe I should just go for it!

Sailrite

Bill... Sailrite sells videos that take you thru their projects step by step. I have made dodgers, covers, seatcovers as well as many other things like safety harness, etc. I even got into making clothes because of their simple and clear video instructions (sewing is sewing). Right now I am converting a hank on jib I bought on Ebay to a furling jib and adding sunbrella to it. Their videos cover a lot of subjects and their toll free help line is great. Give them a shot. You won't be sorry. Ron
