As a new sailor I am out there as much as possible trying to learn the basics, and get as much as possible out of my new boat. I have a 1979 O'Day 23, original main and 130 genoa with CDI Roller Reefing. I learned that a beam reach was one of the fastest points of sail, however my boat does much better sailing upwind. What am I doing wrong? I use a GPS for my speed indicator, but it is obvious my boat does better pointed upwind then any other point of sail. If this matters I also have a terrible time sailing on a broad reach, very little speed even in a good breeze. Could the boat be "out of tune". Most of the reviews I read prior to purchasing the boat said that the boat did not perform well sailing upwind. However, this is where I do best. My first thought was that my mast fly was off, however I always check a nearby flag for wind direction confirmation. The reason this situation is so apparent is that where I live the winds are almost always out of the north or south, and I sail east and west (main channel direction).I know the principles of sailing sails out on a reach in when sailing upwind. I also try to watch my telltales for proper sail trim. Any ides would be appreciated.
