Often hear or read the term "sail number". Are the hull number and sail number one in the same? Thanks for your help.

Depends...

Some class associations, like the Sunfish Class Association, assign the sail number when you join. Ex: A sunfish may have a hull number of 1234 but may have a sail number of 15856. On Catalinas, the hull number and the sail number are basically the same (Newer boats add a 1 before the hull number to get the sail number). My boat is hull number 0622, but my sail number is 10622.

Just got one

We just entered a jib and main series here on the Long Island Sound, and to race, a sail number was required. The local sail makers told us they'd put anything we liked on the sail, but the idea was to be unique in any events we might enter. They recommended the hull number, making it highly improbable that another boat would carry the same number. As well, they said, no problems would arise with race committees of more serious, sanctioned events. Seems to be the accepted way to go.

sometimes....

the sails do not get to the manufacter in time to ship with the boat ( that containers gonna ship no matta what!). then the sails get shipped u p s getting there ahead of the container! boats have color schemes and the sail numbers do not reflect the manufacturing number ,the hull number does that, noting builder, hull number, month built and year.

Ramu, the hull number...

Is located on the transom, on the starboard side. It's a 13(?) character combination of letters and numbers, and the serial number is embedded in that series. I think the US Coast Guard has a guide for deciphering the number, and it has also been discussed in the archives- A search for 'Hull Identification Number' should turn up the articles which discussed this. Good luck! --Jon Bastien H25 'Adagio'

Racing

Sail numbers are used to identify boats racing. I did not have a sail number so contacted the Southern California Yachting Association and for a fee they assigned a number to me. Any local yacht club should be able to put you in touch with the association that sanctions races in your area.

Clarifying by adding to the confusion.

Ramu's question of where the hull number is located brings up a further issue which is really going to confuse things. The answer Jon B gave actually refers to the manufacturer's SERIAL NUMBER which is NOT the same thing as 'hull number'. Hull number is the age-old practice of sequencing hulls (actually referring to the hull and not a finished model) which go into the works queue and leave the shop as product. It was only in the early 1970s that the boating industry became required to stamp into the transoms of production yachts the indecipherable ID code you see today. I know from our practice at Cherubini that the required serial number and the hull number need not have anything to do with each other. We numbered our hulls with the year in which boat order was first cut and then a sequence number for that year (i.e., 795 = 1979 and 5th hull that year. In fact '795' was the only boat I remember which left the factory with sails labelled with the hull number. We thought it was cooler and more understated to leave them blank). Sail number is what is displayed on the sail and is determined by the racing organisation. It does not necessarily have anything to do with either boat serial number (stamped on transom) or factory hull number (a factory-only ID). In fact its only intention is to be unique. Of the two I think hull number is the more appropriate for the sails in the event you do not have an OFFICIAL sail number because as someone mentioned it's unlikely any other factory will have the same hull-numbering system as your boat's does, and by definition the same hull number will never appear on have two boats from the same factory. But as I said somewhere else it's sort of 'poser' to have any non-official number on there at all. By way of example: Richard Petty's 'sail number' would be 42. His car's serial number would be the chassis VIN number. His 'hull number' would be the job code the factory used to ID his car before it was shipped. NONE of these numbers are the same. Hope this confuses everyone now! JC
