Sail mods to convert to furling?

I'm buying a boat without roller furling on the jib. If I add it, do I need to have work done on the jib so it rolls up right?

Two things, at least

When you convert to roller furling you will need to change the old jib hanks and luff over to a tape of some sort to slide into the roller furling extrustion. In essence, the leading edge of your jib will look like the leading edge of your main. When you have that done, consider adding a foam pad to the luff. This will allow you to reef the sail partially while maintaining decent sail shape. Rolling the sail part way without the foam will lead to an ugly sail shape. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

RF Sail Conversion

Hi Mike welcome to the Doyle Sailmaker Forum. Conversions of hank on genoas to Roller furling are a common thing. Any experienced sailmaker can do the conversion, but you will need to supply some information. You will need to give the sailmaker, either the proper size for the luff tape, or the make an model# of the furler you are putting on the boat. Most furler manuals will state the proper tape size for the furler. Next, you will need to provide a Maximum luff length of the furler between the Sail attachment points, which are the shackle on top of the furler drum, and the shackle on the bottom of the head swivel. This should also be explained in the manual, but your sailmaker can talk you through or provide you with a measurement form. Third, the side of the sail you want to put the cover on, and the cover color. Cost will normally be time and materials, but most sailmakers can estimate the cost pretty close.

sail condition

Most sail makers will check out the sail but if it is light weight or in poor condition, consider a new sail. r.w.landau

Tim at Doyle

Tim. I am planning to install a CDI ff2 furler on my Hunter 240 in the spring. Could you shoot me an email at Kenkindy1@yahoo.com regarding an estimate on conversion from a hanked on standard Doyle 110% genoa to appropriate for the furler and Sunbrella. Thanks, Ken Koons
