I'm considering changing from my hanked on jib to the CDI roller furling system. Does anyone know of who will modify my sail, or is it almost the same price for a new sail? Thanks, Jay
(disclaimer: I've not had this work done)I believe that I've seen that having a hank-on headsail converted for roller furling use is not a huge deal - depending on boat size, it probably doesn't exceed $350. Any competent sailmaker does this on a regular basis. Not talking about adding a foam luff or anything fancy, just removing hanks and adding luff tape. There was a thread discussing this within the last couple months.Good Luck!Tim BroganApril IV C350 #68Seattle
Last winter I purchased a CDI FF2, and a new 150% Genoa with 6.5 oz dacron, luff tape, and sunbrella for around a grand. Call Airforce Sails and ask to speak to Bill James. He was very friendly and helpful. I do not think it is wise to buy a lighter weight dacron if you are using one sail only and will sail in heavier wind conditions. I have reefed my genoa down to about storm jib size, and it works well.
try yellow pages first...or call any sailboat dealer or chandlery... If your current headsail is full hoist you may have to cut it to allow the drum and swivel to fit. Besides converting to luff tape the other options are adding a luff pad to allow you to reef the sail, and a UV protection strip if you leave the sail on the furler all the time. This can easily add 300-500 to the conversion cost. Suggestion... go to www.thesailwarehouse.com and check out the furler/sail packages. You'll also find prices for modifications to your existing sail. For instance: a CDI FF2 unit with a 135% genoa with white uv cover is priced at $799. That's almost as cheap as modifying your existing sail. My suggestion is to sell your hank on sail and buy the package deal.
