Sail Material

Hi Everyone,

I have an old 155% North Genoa that came with my boat. I got it out for the first time this weekend and it worked great for its old age.

Along the foot of the sail the material is different from the rest of the sail. It is ripped, but not all the way through. The part that's torn looks and feels very white and crispy almost like a potato chip packet. The ripped material is "delaminated" from what feels like very thin nylon and its slightly sticky to the touch.

Now I know most of you are going to say take it to a sail loft. However, I am thinking of getting a roller furler next season and a new sail to go with it. I would rather put the money towards that.

Does anyone know what the material is i'm looking at? Is it possible I can patch it some how?

Thanks,

Warren .

It sounds as if it is either some sort of repair material that has a sticky back that may have been applied over some damage. You can buy that stuff in large rolls and cut it to the needed shape. It often is used as spreader protectors or stanchion chafe protectors where the sail continually rubs against a spreader tip or stanchion. That is my guess.

At ok, this is a deck sweeper and I think its torn because it rubs on the stanchions. So that explains a lot.
thanks!
