I'm looking for a loft to re-stitch my jib's UV cover. The jib still holds shape decently but it is far from new so I really just want a decent job at a good price. Any recommendations on a good value and good work sail loft? I'm on the peninsula but anywhere on the Bay is good.

Thanks.

Dan, Rooster Sails in Grand Marina (Alameda) recently changed hands because of Rui's passing away, they are now Marchal Sailmakers, 510-239-5050. They're in my boat yard and very handy. I have had great experience, since they do old sails as their specialty, rather than new.

You could also check out the ads in Latitude 38 (the whole magazine is on line, too).

If the UV cover is more than 5 years old it is probably nearing the end of its useful life so I would consider replacing it. The stiching job is the costly part of the repair and you would want to maximize the interval of time between now and having to do it again. I would also recommend you inspect the straps and replace any that may have started to deteriorate. A good job may run you $400-$500.

I just had my Jib cover re-sewn. Doyle sales is at Alameda Marina, and it was $240 labor and about $40 material.

Was the cover re-sewn, or did you get a new cover? $280 for a new sun cover sounds like a tremendous deal.

The sail is in the shop at Doyle. They charge $7/ft. to install a new UV cover. I am getting the same green sunbrella that was on there before though I was tempted to get a lighter white Dacron at the same price.
