I've never used a kit. I hear that sailrit has great kits but I found that ordering the parts and cloth myself was cheaper.
I'd recommend the book "The sail maker's apprentice." It has everything you need to start from scratch.
I made a kit from sailrite for a 15' foot dinghy. It went very well, on the home sewing machine, though it took a little time. They provide the plans, something you don't get if you buy your own sailcloth and materials. Anyway, worked well.
