We are going to move our Hunter 30 from Niceville Fla to the Grandview Marina in Mobile Bay. We are new to the gulf, but have sailed 2 years on Lake Stockton. Have experienced all kinds of weather but realize the gulf is different. Would like to sail outside and take 2 days. Anchorage suggestions? Things to watch out for? Appreciate any suggestions from experience.

We made the trip from Orange Beach to Fort Walton Beach last year when we bought our H290; we made the trip on the inside, as there won't be any facilities leadiing out to the gulf. Your only choice for a 'half-way' stop is going to be Pensacola.

There are plenty of marinas available in Pensacola, depending on how far north into the bay you'd like to sail... and if memory serves, there are a few nice anchorages just inside and west of the Pensacola pass.

Good luck, and enjoy the trip!

Going to be tough to make it in two days unless one of the days is a 24 hour one, if ya want to go outside.. The anchorage at the east end of Big Lagoon, near the north west side of Fort McRee, is a good one (it is marked as a spoil area but is fine).. The run from there to Grand View, on the outside, the next day is a bit longer than ya might want to try in a day.. but it is do-able. The run from that anchorage to Grand View via the Intercoastal is a good bit shorter. A caution.. don't consider Perdido Pass as an option ... it is tricky and should be run only at slack water if you aren't familiar.. I think I remember a sign that reads " Pucker Factor 7.2" on that pass. Generally what you are looking at for that move is a fine run over some beautiful water .. There probably will be dolphin running with you over parts of it on the outside.

Don't be afraid of Perdido Pass, but a little local knowledge helps. If you want to come in there, send me a message and I'll give you details. My home port is Orange Beach, and I'm very familiar with the area from Pensacola Pass to Mobile Bay.
