Help! I just purchased a used spinnaker which had sticky backed letters on it spelling out a "Plub" for a local business. I have removed the stitching around the letters and the letters themselves only to find a sticky residue remaining on the sail. Any suggestions as to how to remove the "Gunk without damaging the sail? Richard.

Rubber Cement Thinner

Richard, back in the Dark Ages we used rubber cement and rubber cement thinner on our artwork in the ad agency. This was really delicate stuff, so we had to be gentle when we were moving and re-moving the articles, pictures and captions. There were two ways to clean up residue. 1. Rub it up with a "pickup" ... that's a lump of dried rubber cement. Since the residue is by its nature sticky, you give it something even "stickier" to latch on to. 2. Soak it in rubber cement thinner and wipe it clean before it evaporates. It is still available at art supply stores and is a distant (weaker) cousin to Goo Remover and Goof-Off that you will find at a hardware store.
