Last year we purchased a new Hunter 33. Through the sailing season we had no water in our bilge. After being proper winterized by the dealer, our boat went into the water 5 days ago.

Yesterday, we took the boat across Lake Ontario to our home port. We had to motor across due to the lack of wind. Just before leaving I noticed some water on top of the sail drive which I dried up with a cloth.

After our 5 hour trip, I noticed water again on the sail drive. See pictures.

Is this normal?

You need to check where the water is coming in. The yanmar sail drive I believe has two Seal's which would make it unlikely coming through the sail drive mechanism. Is there any hoses above that area that could drip water? Water on a sail drive is not normal.

Thanks NJsail. The dealer who also winterized the boat just emailed me and also believes is a nearby hose/hose clamp that needs to be tightened. (hose leading from the sail drive to water pump.

I will check tomorrow.

Interesting. I just noticed that your Hunter came fitted with a Yanmar SD20. Very convenient as you have the same manufacturer for both units. Our transmission is a ZF (Hurth) SD 10 married to a Yanmar 3YM30. I see no ZF dealers in Canada and only one in the USA that being in Pennsylvania.

Interesting about the different Sail Drives. Are they the same, perhaps just branded differently?

To get back to the problem...it turns out that the brass valve with the T-handle on the right side (you can just see it in second picture) was dripping. The dealer came by and we checked everything out. When the valve is completely open, all the way to the end stop, it does not leak, but if you close it by just one turn or more, it starts to leak.

5 days later and still dry.

We have decided to watch it and change it when the boat comes out of the water at the end of the season.

Anyone else have any issues with that valve?

I only wish that it was rebranded; but, the ZF SD 10 weighs 22 lbs more than the Yanmar SD20. There are other significant differences including oil change every 250 hours or each year on the SD 10 and 100 hours or each year on the SD20. The Yanmar is manufactured by Kanzaki which is a division of Yanmar. Early on when I thought the SD 10 was a Yanmar product, they replied: "Since this is a product of ZF and manufactured by ZF, my suggestion would be for you to contact ZF to see what there recommendations are . . ."

I haven't had a leak in the engine room yet. But have had leaks in the Espar hydronic system and leaks at the values for both the head uptake and the galley sink drain. And I have been and still am labouriously chasing an intermittent leak in the domestic fresh water seeping in from the forward limber hole in that same pan.

What is the model of your Yanmar?
