Cleaning sails
While most sailmakers offer a cleaning service, many sails can be cleaned by yourself, depending on the type of dirt or stains. If you have an area large enough and clean enough to lay out your sail, you can usually get most normal dirt and mildew spots out with patience, mild detergents, and plenty of fresh water. For general soiling, some laundry detergent mixed with water, and either a terry towel or SOFT bristle brush will do the job. Stiff Brushes can abrade the fabrics finish. For mildew, a bathroom mildew remover, such as Tilex will get mildew off. If you want, use some chlorine bleach diluted with water. And no matter what, rinse with copius amounts of water.Too much bleach can yellow Dacron. But used carefully these cleaning agents will not harm your sail, afterall it's only plastic. For rust, grease and other substances, consult your local sailmaker for the best options.
