I am thinking of sending my H170 mainsail and jib to SailCare for cleaning and pressing. Has anyone had experience with them ? COuple of other quick questions: (1) How did you pack and ship the mainsail - folded or rolled. Did you remove the batens ? (2) How did you pack and ship the jib - again folded or rolled ? If you folded or rolled how did you remove the forestay cable that holds the mast up. It appears to have an "eyelet" that does not go through the cable sleave. Was UPS the best way to ship. Thanks for your help and pointers. Jatinder

Fold and Roll

I had mine done by Sailcare in 2002. They will tell you how to ship them. But I folded and rolled them and sent via UPS. Just give them plenty of time to do the process so that you are not left without. When they receive them, they will inspect them for any necessary repairs and let you know when they get them. If you need repairs, you must authorize them at that time. They will provide an estimate to you. Then they will schedule them to process them. They will need several weeks to complete. They offered a 10% special if I got them to them before January. The 10% covered the shipping cost. I had a main & a jib done. They were 1-2 weeks beyond the schedule date they told me.

or their web site www.sailcare.com. I just got mine back and they did an outstanding job. I had them install new yarn telltales as well. You'll be happy with their work.

removing hardware

Do I need to remove all the hanks and sliders from the mainsail? I am guess the answer is yes.

It might be prudent to check with your local sail maker about the services and cost they offer. Typically after a few yeras of use there are minor repairs that need to be done; restitching a batten pocket or a leech cord seam, etc. I'd rather get the sails checked by an expert and, oh, by the way, while you're at it get their recommendation on cleaning as well.
