got my sails back from sail care today with a sad note that they are beyond redemption. (i at least thought the jib was usable). don't think the previous owner really knew the sad shape they were in....just think he neglected them sorely! (like the rest of the boat) anyway looks like i will be looking for some new, or good used sails. i do have a new mainsail from a oday 27 i believe. any suggestions as to the cost effectiveness of having it modified? i was also thinking on possibly using it for barter with one of the used sail places....i could use some suggestions here.

Just Buy new sails

The 23 was made a long time ago and many of them that are still in use are on there 2nd or 3rd set of sails. The Oday sail has got to be old too, because they haven't made any Odays for a few years. I cannot imagine that it would be worth paying several hundred dollars to rework that old cloth into another size sail. To do a recut right you'd have to take apart the entire sail and reassemble it. That's more labor than just building a new sail with new cloth. Get your sail dimensions and start shopping. There are sails from other boats that might fit. And there might be another boat that has cheap new sails available that might fit. I know a fella who bought Catalina 22 sails and they fit his Windrose 22 just fine. The best deal is to find a racer who has sails close to your size. Serious racers keep replacing their sails every two to three years so if you could use Etchels or J24 sails you might be in luck.

check the web

There are a number of sail used sail brokers on the web. Check Bacon & Assoc. in Annapolis, Atlantic Sail Traders in Bradenton and others.

New Sail Program

We had the same situation. We ended up planning a replacement program over two years that started with a new main as the first step in the first year. Then we bought a new 110 jib a year later. You will be amazed at the performance improvement from just a new main. In 10-15 knot breezes, we have 5 degrees less heel and an added 1-1.5 knots of boat speed. Weather helm is just a small tendency to head up (right where we want it!) I much preferred to delay the second replacement in order to end up with new sails from a good local sailmaker. good point

i think my jib is probably usable for another season or 2. so buy a main this season and a jib next so they don't both come "due" at once again.

William, I am with UK Sailmakers Detroit. We have a large database of used sails. If you send me an email joe@ukdetroit.com I would be happy to search and see if we could find something to work for you. Joe

Used mainsail

I just went through the process of purchasing a new main for my 1985 Hunter 23. The new one arrived last week. I have my original main in a sail bag and probably won't ever use it. mncadman@yahoo.com
