Hi Don, I have an O'Day 23 which used to point into the wind when I let go the tiller. Since I replaced the jib with a roller furling 150% genoa (which i had cut out of an old drifter), she now falls off the wind. The mast is down now for repairs to the cabin tip. Can the balance be corrected by altering the rake of the mast, or is the jib just too big for the boat to point into the wind if I let go? Thanks, Mel

Mel: The 150 is a big sail and is overpowering the main causing the boat to fall off. Before I started raking the mast, I'd try to induce more power into the main. Get the 150 set up for full power with all telltales flowing then deal with the main. Say your sailing closehauled in 10 to 12 knots of wind, induce about 20% to 25% of draft depth and eliminate as much twist as you can and see what happens. I'd try that first. I think that may solve your problem and balance out the boat. You still may get a little falling off but maybe not.
Along those lines
You might also try moving the genoa blocks back in order to flatten the foot of the sail and allow the top to twist off a little. This would be especially effective if you notice the front of the main being 'backwinded' by the genoa. It would open up the slot, allow the main to pull a bit more, depower the genoa, and might just help your balance problem.
