I am planning an accent to the top of my mast soon and need some help. I am going to climb up the mast using a mast ladder, but I also want a safety line attached to me just in case. But I don't have nor want to buy a harness. I know that there are some knots that are commonly used for a safety harness, I just don't know which ones they are. Can you point me to a resource that will teach me how to tie a safety harness hitch? Thanks.

Anthony: I don't even know you but I am sure that you life is worth every bit of $50. I think that you should reconsider not having some type of safety harness. We use a climbing harness that you can purchase at any store that sells climbing gear. How are you going to hold on and do anything at the top of the mast? DON'T DO IT MAN!

...is really hard on the gelcoat. Back in the sixties rockclimbers used "diapers" made of flat webbing, which were highly uncomfortable and prone to slippage. A nasty way to die, coming out of your diaper. Do yourself a favor and order a climbing harnass from REI. A bosun's chair or a climbing harnass is a fairly important piece of safety gear for anyone planning to leave the dock. There's NO WAY you can adequately check or repair the standing rigging using mast steps only.

Using a safety harness is the wrong thing to use, why ?, they have no straps around your groin, if you slip, the harness will restrict the use of your arms then what ??, BORROW a boswain's chair, and hook one of your halyards, and have someone handle the other, end, from the cockpit.
