Safety lines

My '76 O'day 25 apparently never had a Bow Pulpit, so the safety lines from the last set of forward stanchions connect to deck plates about two feet aft of the bow. I just acquired an original Bow Pulpit and noticed that the safety line connection points are high up on the railing, about the same height as the top of the stanchions. If I connect my safety lines there they would essentually be parallel to the deck all the way forward to the top of the bow pulpit. Wouldn't the safety lines then interfer with the jib? I plan to add a connection to the base of the bow pulpit that would allow me to connect the safety lines at that point which would be very near where the lines are now attached to the deck. Assuming all this makes sense, does anyone have a comment on the correct connection point for the forward end of the safety lines?

King- My O'day 28 has the safety lines connected to the top of the pupit and yes a tiny bit of the jib touches the top of the safety line. Not enough to affect performance. I'd go to the top just for additional safety were I you.

My 75 Oday25 connect at the bottom of the bow pulpit and all my foresails still touch the safety line when close hauled. I don't know how you could rig it to the top and not have significate sail chafe.

try this

same as mine ..... but i fastened 2 stainless steel d rings low on the puplit with ss hose clamps so the jib doesnt hit when sailing then at the dock move the safty lines back up .... i seen another like this then i copied it .

My '76 O'Day 25 has them high on the bow pulpit as you described. The jib drapes across them, but doesn't drastically affect performance, nor do I have any heavy wear areas. However, I am considering putting an eyestrap on the deck between the bow pulpit and the first stanchion to pull the safetly lines down. I've seen some boats in my marina with that setup, and it seems to free the jib. Out of curiosity, where did you pick up the bow pulpit? Mine is damaged, and I'd like to get it replaced "someday".

I also have a 76' O'Day 25. I recently installed a furling jib and moved the safety lines to connect at the bottom of the bow pulpit, like Ric's. It does seem to free up the jib a little, but like Ric says, you will still some contact with the safety lines no matter what, and that's normal. Just out of curiosity, do you (or anyone else) have those little metal triangles just above the turnbuckles on your shrouds? I do, and they bug the hell out of me because my jib lines frequently get caught on them. I'm wondering if I would lose any benefits from just getting rid of them. Apparently they're used when lowering or raising the mast. Eric

Bow Pulpit

Herb, thanks for the info. I got my bow pulpit off a boat that was demasted in a storm up in MD. The owner had advertised in the O'day Owners site that he was parting out the boat, so I bought his bow pulpit. I checked a fabricator down here and they offered to fabricate a SS copy for $450. Seemed to be a bit much, but if that's they way you want to go I can provide the info.

Bow Pulpit

I found a guy down here (Ft Worth) that would do one for about that price, but I'm cheap. I don't necessarily want "new", but "unmodified" would be nice. Dropping the mast about 4 feet on the bow pulpit makes an ugly custom job. Out of curiosity, what did you pay? By stern rail has a pretty ugly welded repair on it, and I'm hoping to eventually replace both. Both are pretty low on my priority lists, but I try to keep an eye out.

Bow Pulpit

Herb, I paid $100 for the Bow Pulpit and it's in perfect condidtion. However, it cost $250 to have it shipped down here -- so I still wind up in the expensive range. I've seen stern rails advertised in O'day Owners -- you might also check D&R Marine. I'll ask if the stern rail is still available from the boat where I got my Bow Pulpit. If so, I'll let you know.
