Has anyone rigged safety lines to their Hunters for safely moving about their boat during rough weather? Any and all ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Yes, I'll use safety lines (aka jack lines) when the weather turns nasty or when sailing at night or more often when I'm singlehanding. I will usually run a line from bow to stern cleats on both the port and starboard sides. These are most effective with a harness that has two tethers with clips. If you're tethered to the binnacle and need to go onto the foredeck for example, you clip on to one of your safety lines BEFORE releasing the tether from the binnacle. Or if you are clipped to the starboard safety line and need to cross over to the port side, you clip on to the port safety line before releasing from the starboard side. Don't clip onto the "life" lines. They are not strong enough. Safety lines are a good way to keep your MOB practice sessions just that--practice. Happy sailing!

Waves over 2-3 feet prompt use of a harness hooked to a jackline to go forward. I hook up all the time if no one else on board is checked out on the man overboard drill on our h27.

I appreciate the replies. I believe I needed to be more specific with my question... What I need to know is where to attach my jacklines, what kind of line, rope or wire, to use for them. I am a still learning the language of sailing so please forgive me if I miss the proper term. Thanks for the replies! Brian

Jackline Placement

I haveinstalled two jacklines that run from the front of the bow pulpit back to the toe rail on my H-27. These are essential and were ordered, by lengh, from West Marine. They are about 1" flat webbing and came with a carabiner (for easy installation at the bow) on one end. The other end is stitched to itself, but is easy to run through the aft toe rail and tie off. When in use, we use the chest type of harnesses with a six foot tether that easily attaches to the harness and to the jackline with a carabiner on each end. This may be the type of information that you were wanting.
