Safety Grab Rail

We have a 1991 Mac S. I have growing concerns about transitioning from the top deck, stepping down into the cockpit. The safety rail/cable/stanchion is too low to be of any benefit. Basically, there is nothing to grab on to that will provide some balance and support; sometimes the boom is close enough...but not always.

I am envisioning an inverted U shaped piece of tubing that would attach to the upper and lower deck. It doesn't have to be very long (fore/aft), but just enough to provide something to grab on to without having to bend over so far it defeats the purpose of being there. This would be mounted near where the lifeline runs. I don't want to reinvent the wheel...if someone has already built something like this. Suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
