as a recent owner of an older catalina 250 wb with a swing keel problem i am wondering if the boat would be safe to sail with the ballast filled but not use of the keel until it is fixed ? i am waiting for the new updated retrofit keel lifting system and new turning ball assembly kit. just do not know when i will get them and have them installed.

Perhaps it would be safe...but it would be frustrating. Without the keel it will be a bit unstable and windward performance will be lackluster at best. I would wait for the repair. Besides I would not want to chance the keel falling or other damage occurring.

thanks for confirming what i thought. i knew that going to weather i would not be able to hold a line, especially on windy days. i believe you are right about waiting for the boat to be fully functional and therefore safe. john

Agree with others. Additionally, it would be almost impossible to balance the boat, the center of lateral resistance would mover far aft w/o the board. You could probably only sail downwind. I guess that you could use it as a slow motorboat, but sailors generally don't like to be dependent on their motors. Or have their only direction of travel be to a lee shore.

I would not do it - but I guess you already got that from the others.

We used to sail our 1985 C 25 swing keel in the up position all the time, unless the winds were strong enough to need it. The Chesapeake Bay in the summer is notoriously weak for wind. It was a different design than your model, as we had real cast iron ballast all low in the boat in the swing keel itself, & no water ballast. I'm not as experienced with water ballast boats, like the McGregor. But If you have the ballast tanks filled, & do not have the swing keel down, then under light conditions U may just experience the boat sliding sideways some upwind, without enough lateral resistance to overcome the prevailing wind & tide. I would not sail with the board up in heavy winds, because there will be a strong tendency to heal over to the point of rounding up or worse, capsizing. But most Catalinas have a tendancy to just round up into the wind & spill wind from their sails when they heel more than 25 degrees anyway. Better to be safe than sorry.
