I started sailing at the Washington Sailing Marina many years ago and the same thing was in evidence then. Even at my current marina I see boats here and there that are falling apart and never leave the slip. For example, I have a mid-70s Catalina 27 next to my slip that I do not believe has either left the slip or been bottom painted in over 8 years. I can see an algae farm growing at its waterline. Yet I suppose the owner must be keeping up with his slip fees....

See that all the time here too.. My next door slipmate has not been on the boat in about 5 years.. boat is still tied up from Hurricane Katrina .. another nice later model Hunter 34 is in the same condition.. its rub rails have been pulled loose and there are lots of cosmetic problems but no one has been there to work it/clean it up since Katrina.. Marina manager tells me that they are still paying the bills and he actually talks to them sometimes.. but the boats don't move.. Amazing.

These customers are what the marinas owners love !! They pay the full slip fee and don't use any of the services. Think about it .....no water.... no electricity.... no parking don't use any of the facilities ! ! BUT they pay the same as everyone else ! They don't complain or otherwise make problems. From a marina owners view point they are the best !

We have too many of those here too, in the water and just getting worse and worse.
I have often thought about the post above this one..... they are the perfect tennant... much like the perfect gym membership holder! Pay the fees, don't actually come to contribute to the crowds, complain, or abuse the equipment!

Couple years ago a fellow got a great deal on a Cat 30 just a bit older than ours. Had a new outboard and he got it all buffed out, new canvas, everything. After a couple sails, things did not go well one day, she came in, was put away quickly and no one ever returned (that we saw) and she just got more moldy and dirty..... sometimes we would take our hose over and just give her a good rinse....... Amazing how much money there is out there just being thrown away..

My C-22 was neglected for 15 yrs before I got it. So the good thing is they can be sailed again with a little effort after being abandond.

If we could have we'd have purchased the Cat30 next to us just 'cause we knew what a good deal and good boat it was. There are such good deals around, just hate to see a boat unloved.

Missing Owners

I once had a Olsen 30 ULDB next to me once. She was brand new. The 20-ish somethings who owned her raced her several times a week for a year. Then they disappeared. Ten years later, the boat was a mess and it sold for a song. Turns out they were the children of a mega-wealthy European family who simply had their fun and moved on.

Later, I was next to a famous Hollywood actor's Swan (I won't say who). In the five years I was in that slip, I only saw him once. He did have a maintenance crew come weekly tho. However, they drove 60 miles to do so instead of using a local service.

Ten of us fractionally own a 24 foot pontoon boat on a local lake. We found it in poor cosmetic but otherwise good shape. We paid a pittance for it. This was owned by a wealthy developer who's kids loved it for two years and moved on. He forgot he had it (accountant paid the bills)!

Everyone has similar stories. What I will never understand is people who pay good money for these boats and then let them sit and rot while still paying big slip, insurance and tax bills. it's a real mystery.

We have a couple of boats on our dock that have not been out in years. I don't know why they keep the boat or keep paying slip rental.

Hate to see a boat sit and rot We have ours in a dry sail lot and there are several there that have been left unattended for quite some time. On the other hand, since I've been battling cancer for the past year, we've only had ours out once this summer. Hopefully we'll be able to get out the end of this month.

Yes, Windycrest Sailing Club is our home. Great bunch of folks. Can't wait to get healthy enough to spend more time out there.

Lookks like the wind caught the roller furled jib and blew it over. SAD!! You wonder how these folks treat their kids and dogs. Sailboat, I believe, have souls. Fair Winds, Old Salt...
