Sabre 34 Centerboard

I am revitalizing an '84 Sabre 34 with a shoal draft and centerboard. The centerboard cable snapped. Has anyone had experience replacing this cable? I believe a boatyard has to do the work. Does the centerboard have to be removed? Is the steel cable still the best replacement?

The place to ask is the Sabre Group on Groups.io. About a 1000 knowledgeable Sabre owners. This topic has come up in the past although, I have not paid a lot of attention to it since I don't have a centerboard Sabre.
