Just purchased this model, have a question about the support cable exiting the rear of the boom. Being a newcomer to sailing I assume that this connects to the vinyl coated cable attached to the mast top to support the rear of the boom. If this is so, I can only pull the cable out about one foot and it stops or jams. I can pull it back in by pulling the rope at the other end (which I assume connects to the cleat under the boom when adjusted properly), but when I try to pull it out again it stops at about one foot, not long enough to make the connection. Should this come out further to make the connection or am I missing a piece of cable or a part to make the connection???? If I am correct and it should come out, what could be wrong??? How can I correct it??? Has anyone else had this problem??? Thanks for your help!!!!

That would be what I would use it for

I also would use it for the out haul. I am assuming the poster has limited sailing experience so I will include an explaination. An outhaul at the end of the boom controls the foot tension on a mainsail. It attaches either directly to the clew of the main or, more commonly, attaches to a slide on the end of the boom to which the clew of the main is also attached. Why would one want to control the foot tension? To control the shape of the main sail. Other lines that contribute to main shape are the main haylard & the boom vang. In a nut shell, loosening sail shaping lines increases fullness in the sail for light winds & broad reaches. Tightening flatens the sail to de-power it in heavy winds or to increase pointing ability. There are of course all sorts of exceptions to the last two statemnts but the point is that sailing is all about foil shapes and matching the shape of the sail to conditions and direction the boat is sailing relitive to the wind.

outhaul on one side topping lift on the other.

the previous posts are correct. the cable is the outhaul it runs down the middle of the boom and is tightened or loosened on the cleat on the bottom of the boom. but on the front of the boom are 2 cams with lines running over them and coming out the rear of the boom. you attach one line to the "vinyl coated cable attached to the top of the mast". when the main sail is not up the" topping lift "-which is what this set up is called- holds up the boom. when the main sail has been raised you release the cam at the front of the boom so that the sail is holding up the boom. the other line is a 2nd outhaul to be used when the sail is reefed. it doesn't matter which line you use as the topping lift ,but on my boom the port side line is the one attached to the topping lift. if you don't have lines running through the boom you will have to use a snake to get them through. there are many internet resources and books on sail controls. north sails on the internet has many helpful resources. good luck and good sailing paul in tampa
