The previous owner had recently put in all new head plumbing - new hoses and aluminum tank. I don't like the set up. The discharge hose from the head goes to a Y-valve - one way to the holding tank and the other way to a seacock. On the other side of the tank, there's a mascerator which discharges through another seacock. He only used fresh water to flush the head.

The hoses are all high quality, but the mascerator and Y-valve allow odor to escape. I see no need for the Y-valve and honestly, I would probably never use the mascerator. I'm removing the mascerator, capping the seacock and closing the hole from the tank on the mascerator side.

I'm getting rid of the Y-valve, capping the seacock and going straight to the tank from the head.

I would really like to go to a waterless system. Has anyone had any luck with compostable heads or any other solutions?

Thanks,
Joe

I have a similar set up. There is just a lot of plumbing in a small space and due to the difficulty of bending the thick high quality hoses in small spaces the connections the PO made are less than optimal. At least for the short term I am thinking about "dumbing" down my system to just run to the tank. Be warned though, my tank is only 12 gallons and can fill up fast with company on a weekend. Pumping the tank out and rinsing it thoroughly and often keep the smell down more than anything. Fresh water flushing helps a lot too.

After lookiing the set-up this past weekend, the wife and I decided to take out the tank.

We are going with a dry head. No pump, no hoses, just the head. We'll use plastic bags to deal with the waste.
