I'm considering buying an s2 9.1. How good they perform in offshore? Not ocean crossing but long coastal trips that are 20miles off.
And how do they compare with the morc 30footers, if it is a morc design does that mean it can be ocean going?
Thanks.

I always look at the PHRF ratings for my area. Compare those to similar MORC boats like the Santana 30. You could do a 20 mile coastal trip on a Hobie Cat in good weather, so I should think nearly any boat is fine. Just be aware that many 9.1's had their interiors stripped out for racing, so you might not be very comfortable. Also, racing takes its toll, so if the boat hasn't been well maintained it may need more attention to components, such as the standing rigging, which are stressed more during racing.

MORC is a club that races

In short, if you don't want to race MORC, I woudn't let that guide my decision to buy a boat. That being said, my 9.2A is a well built boat that sails decently, but is no speedster. The 9.1 is a different beast. Some have cored hulls (be ware of water intrusion), the mast is keel stepped, not deck stepped as on the 9.2A and the keel is bolt on, not integral to the hull as on the 9.2A.

If you have your heart set on a racer, I found a good article.

Keep your weather conditions in mind. Boston Harbor is known for consistent winds, but if I were racing head to head I would want a boat that was decent in light to moderate wind most of the time, as heavy winds are rare. If you want to race PHRF, that is a different story as boats have ratings and particular boats will/will not sail to those well.

Anyway, don't get the impression that I race, cause I don't. Just my thoughts.
