Hi all,

I'm looking at a S2 11.0 (on the hard) aand Inoticed wated dripping from a few spots in the keel. Since it has been out of the water for 1 1/2 years, the water must be coming from the bilge. I have no experience with encapsulated balast, so this is a bit disconcerting for me. there is no obvious damage, but i am guessing the boat grounded, ha a repair, and is now leaking again. i am not terribly concerned with fixing the external fiberglass leaks, but i am concerned about water leaking from the bilge into the keel cavity. this would seem to invite frozen water to expand and re-crack the keel housing. finally, is the balast lead or iron?

otherwise the boat seems to be in great shape and the price is low. any info will be most appreciated.

cheers,

rw

The ballast would be lead.

Regarding the leak I would be very cautious. You should have the boat surveyed if you are serious about buying her.

Good Luck!

Where is the water leaking from? If the 11.0 is like the 9.2, the bilge is aft and deep. Therefore it is pretty unlikely that a leak that isn't aft is bilge related. Unfortunately it could be a bit tough to just sound the keel to find evidence of delamination. I suggest you see if you can hire a surveyor, but have an agreement that he look at the keel first and then charge less if you choose to abandon the survey at that point.
