I've been wondering why some folks put S/V in front of their boat names.

I know what the letters stand for but is that a designation for a certain type/ size boat?

Is it only for boats in the oceans or that have sailed a certain distance?

Maybe it has to do with the certification levels of the owners or is it perhaps a state related title for certain criteria?

Just wondering.

S/V designates a sailing vessel. It is normally used formally for documented boats. Many people use it, documented or not, just to make the point that it is a sail boat and not a power boat or F/V fishing vessel.

Ahhh. I get ya. So It's not a faux pax to use it? And frankly I kinda like it on there for the very reason you indicated.
