There have been a few posts recently on the S-1/X-5 autopilot installations. I am in the process of installing an S-1 on my H34. One of the issues mentioned was the wiring connection blocks--that the levers to open the pinch blocks were both stiff and apparently delicate in nature. Examining my S-1 I would totally agree. Too much abuse and they are liable to break off.

Wanting to provide an easier way to both install all the wiring and to be easily able to remove a connection for troubleshooting should a problem arise, I devised a mounting backer board and used barrier strips as the wiring interface to the computer terminal connections to permit crimp-on wiring terminations to address the "easy" issue. The board is 12" x 12" 3/8" plywood. The barrier strips are divided into functional groups.

There are two photos attached.

The SeaTalk wiring is not complete, hence the one unconnected barrier strip. The Rudder, Compass, and Motor wires are all pieces off the supplied cables. The SeaTalk will utilize the same as soon as the control head is mounted and the necessary cable length is determined and cut from the supplied cable (female plugs on both ends).

More posts will follow as work progresses.

Great idea, I have to remove the wiring for the control head to install a new pedestal guard and Navpod so I'm going to copy your idea

You cannot. Didn't you read the fine print? "You can check out but you can never leave"

They are not that bad and you only have to connect them once or some twice to reverse or correct some connections.
