Hi Peggy,

My daughter recently bought a 27' trailer and is new to RVing.
She says that the toilet smells when you open it. She describes a flap at the bottom of the toilet the moves out of the way when you flush.
The P.O. winterized it. They told her to pour bleach in the water tank to dewinterize. They gave her "stuff" to pour in the toilet in the spring. She doesn't know what it is and so I can't tell you.
We live in Maryland, she keeps the trailer in Pa and she is in Fl about to go to Paris today.
Please give me your quick thumbnail (or more) on how she should maintain her systems so I can look genius when I tell her. lol (i actually typed "lol")
Thanks!
Happy Holidays!!!

I need to know a little more about her system

It's obviously a gravity toilet and a holding tank...but is it a self contained system or are the tank and toilet separate components? How is the toilet flushed--by stepping on a pedal or a lever? Is it connected to the fresh water system to supply flush water or does it have its own separate reservoir? If you can't answer any of those questions, some brand names and/or a photo or two would be helpful.

I'm not thrillled with the PO's advice either...bleach has no place in marine or RV sanitation systems 'cuz it's so corrosive and destructive to rubber. Which causes to me to wonder what he did to winterize it...what he used.

Best thing we can do is come up with the make and model so we can get the operation and maintenance instructions for it from the mfr...something the PO apparently didn't see any reason to follow.

Btw...she'll also want to maintain her fresh water system. You can download and print instructions for doing that by searching the archives in this forum for "Fresh Water Maintenance."
