Painted bottom with vc 17 and did well on hull but wing keel(Beneteau 285) has developed some rust, I can clean this up but then how should I treat(paint )this and do I need zinc on the keel as well as the shaft and engine?

rusty keel zincs etc

Put the zincs on the shaft

About the keel I asked this rust question about my Iron keel a couple of weeks ago.
I got all kinds of replys: from sanding the rust spots than painting with a rust preventitive to
taking the entire keel down to bare metal and re coating. An entire strip dpwn is a lot of work
for a few rust spots and pits. ( my opinion) What Im doing is sanding the bad spots down to bare metal than and applying pettit 1 part rust protector before applying bottom paint

keel rust

Thanks for the thoughts, real problem is that the boat is on a trailer so can't get to bottom of keel but will take down what I can and maybe try "rustlock" primer, then seal up joints with 5200 , then bottom paint, should at least be able to use power tools to tackle rust and remaining finish on keel. I don't think the vc17 did as good a job on keel as previous thick multicoating ablatives, but it sure is easy to use and did a good job on rest of hull.

I had some minor rust spots about thie size of pennies on the keel bulb area of my b323. I ground the general areas down to bare iron and coated with 5 coats of interlux underwater primer. Then I recoated with VC17. It held up very well over last season,

The real fix would be to sodablast the entire keel, recoat withInterprotect and then VC17.

I responded to this in detail a few weeks back. You might want to look at some older posts. But, Petitt's Rust Lock Steel Primer is good for the first application. It is epoxy (which you want below the waterline) and it adheres to rust (if you cannot get it totally clean). But, you should follow up with something like Interlux's 2000/2001 Interprotect barrier coat for better results. You also should really get your boat lifted so you can do the bottom of the keel too. If you leave that bare and rusty, it will contribute to interfering with your other work as the rusting process migrates. Do it right if you are going to do it at all, or you will be doing it over sooner than you wish.
