The C-22 I just purchased has a lot of rust on the keel. I'd like to do a quick fix with this now and then refurbish the keel this upcoming fall/winter. It's going to be on a freshwater mooring all summer. I thought about using some rustoleum Rusty Metal Primer then followed with a Cold Galvanizing Compound (93% Zinc). Any thoughts on this? Should I skip the Galvanizing compound and just use some anti-fouling paint? Thank you all for your help. Dave

Rusty Metal

I have used the rusty metal primer topped with interlux Primacon on a tanzer with a cast iron keel. Worked fine.

Re: Rusty Keel

If you're going to refurbish it next year, I wouldn't do anything at all this year other than check the pivot pin and cable. It's not going to rust away in fresh water in just one summer. Why do it twice? Besides, you'll end up with more rust on it at the end of this summer anyway. Go sailing instead!)

Rusty keel. Zinc dust primer.

Hello Dave: I sandblasted my swing keel. Primed with Mc-Zn Zinc-Rich Primer Component "A" (Zinc Dust) & Componant "B" Top coated with 2 component polyurethane EX-2C. All manufactured in Edmonton by Endura. This was done 12 years ago, still like new except where I hit rocks. I usualy patch it up every year on the lowest tip. If allowed to fully cure, it must be sanded between coats. For a good description of this painting procedure, do a Google search on "endura paint". Select the fifth website down "Chebacco News". Regards, Bob B.
