We are looking to buy a used 1990 Beneteau 28.5 First that looks great exceptfor rusty keel bolts - anyone have any input on this - haven't had a survey done yet. Thanks for any help.
We own a '88 First 285 without any rust on the keel bolts; however, we do not use the shower. If the previous owner used their shower, then all of the water would have drained to the tiny bildge and could have corroded the bolts. If the corrosion is not significant and can be easily cleaned and painted, I wouldn't worry about it. If you are uncertain, have it looked at.
I have a First 235 and I went into the same state of shock at the rust on the bolts, except that I bet you mine are even worse. The thing is, almost ALL the Beneteau's of this era have these bolts that bring the surface rust. The F235 has almost no bilge so if you get the dreaded leaking windows, then chances are, there will be keel rust. The great thing is that the bolts might "LOOK" bad but area usually pretty intact below and within the keel.See this page with some shots of a keel bolt and some comments from others facing the problem. The keel bolts are not that expensive and CAN be replaced even while in water done one at a time. Wade recommends a wire brushing to see what you have.See this page:http://home.earthlink.net/~beneteau235/keel_bolts.htmKellyhttp://www.beneteau235.com/
