I have an oil leak somewhere in my engine. It appears in the bilge but I can't see where it is coming from. A mechanic told me it could be a rusted oil pan which requires pulling the engine ($$$$$$)> This is an 86 C30. I know the negine sits low and the bilge is hardly ever dry, any comments?

I would try everything else beforehand. Clean everything if the engine is very dirty. Look for obvious spots. Oil filter, gasket for oil pan, transmission. You didn't mention what kind of engine M25? Do you have a drain plug or hose setup on the crankcase drain that might be the problem. Keep searching and keep a pad under the engine which might assist in determining where it's coming from. Good luck.

Check the dip stick tube

I had an oil leak last summer on my 1986 C-30. The yard found that the oil dip stick tube was loose at the base. The screws just needed to be tightened.

New oil pan

I had an oil leak last summer. There was no obvious source. The thing that lead to the discovery of the source was after wiping the pan off, in a few minutes there would be oil on the forward part of the pan under the raw water pump. Some time before, there was a leak in the raw water pump and a tiny trickle of salt water ran down under the water pump and subsequently dripped off the pan. This is where the rust and leak occurred. The leak wasn't really a leak, but an ooze. The diesel mechanic was able to pull the engine in the boat and replace the pan on board. Good luck where ever the leak is.
