*0 I have a wing keel on my 1988 hunter 23. I have about a 6" x 6" section that is rusted. What is the best way to repair this without completely redoing the whole keel? (I use VC 17)Merri-Lee
seems to me sand blast is the best. I think you can rent one. Seems to me the hull to keel joint is more to worry about. But..who is willing to drop 800 + lbs. with out a boat lift? Not me! good luck Denise
Lee:Considering the small rust area, you probably should leave it alone. If you want to clean up the area, you can just use Rust Lok on the area and be done with it until the next time.If you want to do it correctly you should completely clean the keel (down to bare metal) and redo it. Check out the Interlux site for materials and the process.
Few years ago I took my entire keel down to bare metal and followed the interlux directions . It has held up except for a very small area . I was talking to a boat repair person /rigger whos opinion I value , when I told him I redid the entire keel because of a few spots he just shook his head> He insisted there was no reason to do the whole keel when there were just a few spots. ymmv , Mike
