I recently purchased a 74 C22. I had the boat inspected and was informed that, in addition to the small Catalina smile, the keel bolts are severely rusted an in need of immediate repair. Catalina Direct has a keel bolt retrofit kit which essentially consists of adding sister bolts (rods) next to each bolt to reinforce the keel.
Of course, two of the six keel bolts that are in the worst condition, are the forward two bolts which are located under a seat. This will not allow enough space to accommodate the necessary 18" drill bit. Getting access to these bolts, will require extensive fiberglass cutting and then later repairing. As a novice sailboat owner, I have to say I am quite intimidate to attempt this on my own. I will of course look into having a yard perform the work.
