After 2 weeks in salt water, pin point rust spots seem to be starting on the stanchions. Does anyone know how to stop this process, other than removing my boat from the bay?

I would suggest first using a buffing compound for stainless steel and a buffer. Then wax with a polymer. DON'T USE ANY HARD ABRESSIVES!

SS Cleaners work well.
Most of the S.S. cleaners work well on this surface rust. I have used brasso too.

Bar Keepers Friend
Use Bar Keepers Friend to clean S/S then put a light coat of polish. You'll find Bar Keepers Friend in the grocery store next to Comet and Brasso. Works great on S/S and stubborn stains on the deck. I've used it for years and keep it on my boat.

I don't quite understand about your 2 weeks in salt water. Do you mean the boat was under salt water for 2 weeks due to a sinking? or do you mean you were sailing in salt water? I assume you were sailing or moored in salt water. Your stanchions should not be getting pinhole rust spots so quickly. If it is, then it sure is not SS. Sure sounds a bit strange. As for removing the rust, rubbing compond works fine, so does Bar Keepers Friend. But, if rusts is starting after only 2 weeks, Hmmmmm.... Now, if rust starts on SS stanchions after 10-15 years...... How new are these stanchions and what are they made of?

Rust shows up quickly
I had my h26 couple of years before moving it to salt water. While on fresh water there was never any rust. Within a couple weeks of being on the bay, rust stains started showing up on all the SS railings. I remember thinking that my friends Bombardier jet boat had poor quality SS because he had rust after a very short time, only to find it was just the difference between being on salt water versus fresh. Dan, Very strange. I've had Molly, my 1997 h26, in salt water here in the Bay of Banderas for seven years. No rust anywhere. No blisters either. I've had many sailboats, large and small. The h26 is the most maintenance free boat I have ever owned. David King

Metal protection / polish
I had the same problem on my 260 when I first got it. I got some metal polish from West Marine (I don't recall the name). It took off the rust with no abrasive and just a little elbow grease. It has now been a year and the rust has not re-appeared. I keep my boat in salt water too. I suspect that the rust comes when the metal is unprotected but once you treat it then it take a long time for the rust to return.
