Rust stain on gelcoat deck

Last fall when installing a metal framework for the winter cover I had to make several saw cuts, and foolishly left metal hacksaw filings on the deck of my Hunter 40. When I returned a week later there were many tiny rust stains where each filing was left on the deck. I have tried several solvents (laquer thinner, acetone, fiberglass wash and alcohol), bleach, and a household rust stain remover all to no avail. I could sand them out on flat surfaces, but that won't work on the nonskid areas. Does anyone have an idea that will work?

Oxalic Acid

Tim: Try some oxalic acid. It is contained in some of the deck washes. It works on sails, fiberglass and many other applications. I did a similar thing with a 1 lb propane bottle. The stain will fade with time.

Try a 3M scratch bright pad

I use these all the time for stuff that just will not come out. They work on textured surfices too if you scrub in several different directions. Good luck.

Bar Keepers Friend

Try Bar Keepers Friend and make a paste out of it. Leave it on the spot for a while then come back and wash it off. Works great for a kind of stains, and cleans stainless.

Don't ever park your boat under a fireworks barge!

Result? Iron stains of rust. And it NEVER comes off. Those little stains were on the deck for 15 years. Not anymore. Muriatic acid. The same stuff used for pools and LectraSan maintenance. Buy a jug at you local hot-tub store. CHEAP TOO. It doesn't harm fiberglass or aluminum in the amount of time that it takes to work. Have fresh water ready to go for rinsing. You won't believe how well it works. It's tempting to use it as a soap. The only problem is the FUMES. One breath taken of the open bottle contents and it's all over. Call an aid-car! Don't ever breath it! Apply to your decks from upwind. Vital. And have a long handled nylon brush for 'stirring the pot'. And a gas mask is best. True. I borrowed my son's industrial mask. Perfect. No smell. Cleans sails too. But it kills cotton.

Boy Fred's right about

a fireworks barge ..two years ago we were cover with ash raining down on us during the 4th of July fireworks show. It was also very hot and humid.. what a mess to clean up the next day. It was dark soot stains and it came out with boat soap and water. We now know too look at which which way the winds are blowing and anchor farther away from the barge.

On and Off

"On and Off" liquid by Mary Kate works well for me. Most marine stores have it.
