Rust spots on keel.

I just hauled my '86 H34 and have several small rust spots on the cast iron keel. (spots are about the size of coins) Is it a problem to wait until spring to fix these spots? I would hate to return in march and find the rust has spread all over the keel. Thanks for any comments. Mike

Spots

If this is your first haulout, I am certain that when you repair the rust spots you see now, next year and the years after that, you will find others at different areas. Our keel was sandblasted and epoxied, and we still get some spots each year. It is the nature of the beast, and we sand and coat them each spring before bottom paint. John Kudera

Let it go until Spring

I had the same problem last year. If you let it go until spring, there will probably be a light coat of rust over the entire keel but it's only surface. I sanded the entire thing down, getting all visible rust off and most of the pervious bottom coat. Then primed it with something called Por14 (or close to it), that my marina recommended, painted and put her in the water. So far so good.
