Every fall when I haul my boat there are always a few pit marks on the cast Iron keel(no big deal) I sand them and touch them up with Pettit rust preventitive, that silver stuff. It works ok. Recently someone told me about a product called POR 15. Said it works much better. Has anyone used both products? Is it worth switching? Any opinions would be welcome. POR 15

I have used it for other applications. It is real good stuff - tough, and sticks extremely well. It is best to buy it in smaller sizes, as once you open the container, you want to try to use it all if you can (re-seal the can with SaranWrap before putting the cover back on, otherwise you won't be able to get it back off). Haven't tried it under water, but I suspect it would be real good there - in fact, I'm surprised they haven't marketed it for iron keels. Very strong vapors - use it in a well-ventilated place. Follow directions exactly.

I used

Petit Rustlok on the iron keel of my 1986 Hunter 28.5 when I bought it in 2003. It seemed to work ok, but had a few rust bleed-thru's. The next year I sanded the keel down as much as possible (not all of it to bright metal, but some). I applied POR-15. Put bottom paint on top of it. I've only had a few specks of rust here and there since. I suspect they come from the spots I didn't sand completely to bare metal. I think POR-15 is a very good product for protecting iron keels. You can do the whole keel with about half pint and you really can't re-use the left overs.
