In the process of buying a 1988 - 33.5. The survey was just done and it noted a pin hole with a rust line below it located 3/4 of the way down the port side of the rudfder just aft of the post. Apparently these rudders, built by "Al Walker Foam", have a stailess post welded to "mild-steel" strengtheners and filled with foam. Well I am concerned that the rust is extensive inside the rudder. Any stories/ideas/advise would be appreciated. Also all five thru-hull fuittings are jiggly and lose to the point that they leak. Otherwise no de-lkam in the decks or blisters in the hull.

Jeff, I can't help with the rudder other to say that if should be fixed or replaced. the thru hulls need to be replaced based on age and condition. Leaking thur hulls sink boats! ! ! Both these items would be considered defects and become the responsibility of the current owner to fix or adjust the price of the boat to compasate for your repair bill or to kill the deal all together Good Luck! Rudder Rust

You are right about the rudder but it's Hunters Design. It's two peiced with a cold rolled peice of steel welded onto a Stainless Steel post that you see. You can't keep mositure out of the Rudder so, it will rust sooner or later! I just can't understand why they did this Hmm cost? Want more info Call me 616-455-2792 I have experenice. 2 Broken Rudders!

Rudder Repair

There was an article about rudder repair in a recent issue of Cruising World. Apparently this construction method is standard for rudders on many if not most boats. The magazine described this as a real bear of a repair that took many months of opening up the holes, draining, drying, and filling. And these guys are supposed to be pros.

Also in PS.

In the last three or four issues of Pratical Sailor they did an extensive piece on rudder rebuild with photos. Seeing how the rudder is fabricated really got my attention, scary. In the fall, when the boat is in the sling, I will drop mine out for a winter repair job. But the boat is 21 years old.

Same thing

I had the same thing when I bought my 37.5. There's a company in Clearwater or St. Petersburg FL called Foss Foam that builds the rudders for Hunter. I just bit the bullet and bought a new one. The previous post is correct in that this was pretty much a standard construction technique. I think Hunter now has gone to carbon fiber laminates instead of metal. Jim "Prospect"

Rudders

Jim, If you don't mind me asking, what was the cost of the rudder for your 37.5? Thanks. Paul Bednarzyk H380 Knot Again

The loose deck gear is nothing new on these boats. Most of us reseat them (the railings are the worst an inaccesible) using better stainless hardware. The rudder is also a common problem and would recommend that you pay a yard to fill your rudder after it dries out. Not a total solution bit one that will keep your boat in the water for a long time. Hope this helps.
