I have a Universal 14HP engine in my O'day 31. The temperature gets up to 180 after about 30 - 45 minutes of running. The engine compartment smells like the odor you experience while ironing clothes. Any comments or experience with what I describe? (no I am not ironing my shirts in the cabin)

Hmmmmm!

180 does not seem to be unusually high. How long have you had the boat and has the smell been there ever since you've had it? I would think that there would have to be something touching the exhaust at some point. You might try checking all of the little nooks and crannies for something of a fabric nature. Is there any insulation wrapped around the exhaust, if so, is it the right type? If you have had it worked on lately, check for a misplaced grease rag.

New exhaust

We recently changed the exhaust pipes and wrapped them with an asbestos type thick canvas style tape which our marine supplier sold for $45. This material is held on by a wire wrap. We thought that some kind of filler was cooking out of the wrap. This has gone on pretty long. Any experience with this.

Just a little!

I had the same deal when I replaced my exhaust, however, the smell didn't last but about an hour. I don't remember the brand, if there was one, on the insulation that I used. Could be a different manufacturer and a different quality. You might try unwrapping it a little and see if there is any signs of scorching and give it the ole sniff test. Short of replacing the insulation from another supplier, or getting use to it and hoping it goes away, I'm at a loss. Sorry!!

same smell

About a year or so ago I replaced my exhaust and wrapped it with what I assume is the same type of canvas looking insulating tape you have. Although it is diminishing over time, with about 25-30 hours on the new exhaust, there is still a smell like you describe. I was thinking it came from either the insulation or from a coating that was on the cast iron pipe that was used for the exhaust. Hopefully it will go away soon as everything burns off.
