I have a Hunter 290 and want to add some cockpit speakers and was thinking in the centre console. I checked on the weekend and they donot affect the compass but how the heck do you get the wires from the stereo to the console?? If anyone has done this I could sure use a lesson.
Thanks,

remove

remove the radio and a pvc pipe runs all the way to stern and the rear berth ceiling to wires that go up to console,I think the rear berth light access.

Hunter 33 -
speakers in cockpit

Here's a tip i just picked up in Bill Seifert's book 'Offshore Sailing, 200 essential passage-making tips'. Any speaker holes you create in the cockpit have the potential to become an entry point for weather. His suggestion is to create the opening for a deck plate (Beckson, ABI or Perko) and mount the speakers behind it. Granted, his thoughts are for speakers in the combing, but we all know water has a clever way of finding its way into places we would rather it didn't.

If you also install the radio in the console it is a simple matter. The cover on it is West Marine. 1st radio lasted 6 years and the CD player died and the current one is going on its third year. You can tap power from the courtesy light.

Seadaddler:
It wasn't fun. I started by removing the stero and sending the fishtape through the tub behind the fuse panel. Once it came out the aft ceiling of the boat I attached my 4 wires and pulled them back to the panel. Next I removed the access panel on the ceiling of the Aft cabin, sent the fishtape through the light panel into the aft compartment were the fuel and holding tank are. Attached the other ends of the wires and pulled them back throught the light panel and undid them front the tape. Finally I sent the fishtape down form the top inside the counsel and into the light area again, reattached the wires pulled them back into the counsel. It worked out in the end but took some time and a few tries. Some of the wires were a tight fit.
The speakers sound great and the GPS goes in this weekend.
Cheers

Great

Sounds like you did a good job, when I did mine I had to go up into the arch because I had gotten the speaker and light from Hunter.
It was really great having the radio speakers in cockpit,I had my H-36 come with them the speakers and light already installed in my arch, now I am thinking how to control the radio from the cockpit,my radio has a remote but need to be down below to use.
