have been working on comissioning a Rhodes 19 probably built in the 1960s. Got some great advice on the centerboard and standing rigging. Now have a problem of how to run the main sheet. The boat was aquired with no lines, so I haven't a clue to follow. The boom has 2 pulleys ,one mid boom, the other a short distance from the aft end. There are also 2 pulleys on the aft deck near the transom. These are attached close to the starboard and port rails. Thanks to anyone who can give me some advice. Carl

It was probably like this:

I would guess that the blocks near the rails are for flying a chute, and that the blocks for the mainsheet are missing. Your boat was probably rigged with a simple travler line running abeam at the aft end of the transom, and with the line run starting at the boom, through a block riding on the traveler, through the aft boom block, through the forward boom block, to a block with cleat on the centerboard trunk. Are there indications of a cleat system on the trunk? Justin - O'day Owner's Web

To Justin: Thanks for your reply. There is a cleat system on the trunk. It is set up for the jib sheet and the main sheet. As to setting up a travler line, there appears to be no place to attach a line. Could a line be set up using the blocks near the rails? Also you mentioned flying a chute. With out a back stay , wouldn't this put a lot of strain on the rigging? Thanks again for your reply . Carl

Your mainsheet

our 67 Mariner has the same blocking system as this 19 does. It goes as follows: The sheet attaches to an eyelet on the aft end of the boom. Then it runs down through the (aft) port side pulley, across through the aft starboard side pulley (forming a triangle), up through the aft boom pulley, forward through the central boom pulley and then down to a pulley and cleat mounted on the centerboard trunk. It's not a bad rig at all although some complain that the lines get in the way a little. If you want to spend some $ I suppose that you could get a new mainsheet blocking system from layline (www.layline.com) or perhaps west marine, but try the original out first. Good luck. -h. hey
